Dryer Vent Cleaning Pittsburgh

Washer and Dryer Increase Insurance Rates

Dryer Vent Cleaning Pittsburgh:  Most people wouldn’t dare leave their house with dinner in the oven or a fire burning in the fireplace, but many wouldn’t think twice about going out to run errands while the washer and dryer are running.  According to the Dryer Vent Cleaning Pittsburgh Wizard, clothes dryers are more likely to cause a fire than any other appliance.  Over 17,000 dryer related fires occur annually with failure to maintain the dryer vent system being the number one cause.

Washers and dryers can cause hazards leading to serious home damage; water damage from the washer and fire damage from the dryer.  Many homeowners have filed insurance claims for damages related to the washer or dryer.  These appliances caused nearly $200 million in property damage in 2006, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).  Homeowners who file an insurance claim for damages caused by appliances will likely pay a deductible and see an increase in their premium.

Danger Lurking in the Laundry Room

According to the NFPA, about one third of dryer fires between 2003 and 2006 were caused by clothing catching fire.  Dust and lint caused 27 percent of dryer fires.

Washing machines are a leading cause of water damage claims according to the Insurance Institute for Home & Business Safety.  Frayed, cracked or kinked water supply hoses can burst, causing flooding and serious damages.  After the deductible, these claims cost home insurance providers an average of more than $5,000.

Washing Machine Preventative Maintenance

  • Check washer hoses regularly for bulging, cracking, fraying and leaks around the ends

  • Replace immediately if you see a problem.  Replace every 3 – 5 years as a precaution

  • Leave at least 4 inches clearance between the water connection and the back of the washer to prevent kinking

Dryer Hazard Prevention

  • Always use a lint filter and clean it after every load

  • Know that increased drying time indicates an air flow blockage and is not a sign of dryer aging and wear

  • Gas dryers, like all fuel burning appliances, must be properly vented to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning

  • For electric dryers, make sure it is plugged in to a proper outlet

  • Never go to sleep or leave the house if the dryer is running
